Product Description

3M™ Hot Melt Adhesive 3748 is a tough, flexible thermoplastic adhesive designed for bonding a wide variety of substrates, including wood, plain and coated corrugated materials, fabrics, foams, and plastics. It is especially formulated for bonding low surface energy plastics and coatings, such as polyolefins. This adhesive offers high-temperature stability and thermal shock resistance, making it suitable for applications subject to temperature fluctuations.

Key Features

  • 100% Solids: Contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ensuring environmental compliance.
  • Rapid Strength Development: Sets and obtains handling strength in seconds, increasing productivity.
  • High-Temperature Stability: Maintains performance at temperatures up to 79°C (175°F).
  • Versatile Bonding: Effective on low surface energy plastics, including ABS, PVC, polycarbonate, polypropylene, and polyethylene.
  • Easy to Use: Designed for application with 3M™ Hot Melt Applicators, facilitating controlled and precise adhesive application.

Recommended Applications

  • Transportation Interiors: Bonding components in vehicle interiors.

Technical Data

Typical Physical Properties

Property Value
Color Tan
Density 0.93 g/cm³ (0.034 lb/in³)
Viscosity 5,000 cP at 191°C (375°F)¹
Open Time Approximately 45 seconds²
Flash Point 280°C (536°F)³

¹ Measured using Brookfield Thermocel Viscometer with a #27 Spindle at 10 RPM.

² Open time is the maximum time between adhesive application and joining parts, based on a 3.2 mm (1/8 in) semicircular bead on non-metallic substrates at 24°C (75°F). Higher environmental temperatures and/or larger beads will lengthen open times.

³ Determined using the Cleveland Open Cup method.

Typical Performance Characteristics

Test Method Substrate Value
180° Peel Adhesion Flexible canvas bonded to Douglas Fir 32 N/cm (290 oz/in)
Overlap Shear Strength Douglas Fir 1.7 MPa (250 lb/in²)
Ball & Ring Melt Point ASTM E28-67 144°C (292°F)

Application Characteristics

Property Value
Application Temperature 177 – 196°C (350 – 385°F)¹
Temperature Resistance 79°C (175°F)²

¹ Recommended application temperature range. Temperature can be adjusted to regulate desired viscosity, delivery rate, and pot life.

² Highest temperature that the adhesive will support a 14 kPa (2 psi) dead load.
